Artificial intelligence is a term we’ve heard about many times in the last few years. Apple’s Siri (sometimes considered a less sophisticated piece of AI), Amazon’s Alexa are AI based functions. Although AI is not new, a broad set of powerful technologies are emerging under it – Robotics, Deep Learning, Reinforcement Learning and Facial Recognition are just a few to count. Here is how the world of Artificial Intelligence will progress in 2019.
In general, an AI model needs additional hardware to speed up its tasks, such as object detection and facial recognition. In 2019, chip manufacturers like Intel, AMD and Qualcomm are expected to manufacture specialised chips that speed up the execution of AI-enabled applications. These could be related to computer vision, natural language processing and speech recognition. Although these technologies already exist, their efficiency is a concern for many, and these chips could be the answer to that problem.
It is common for employers to worry about finding worthy talent that they need. The recruitment process is a time consuming and stressful one. This is where AI will come to the rescue. With AI powered screening and candidate communication tools, employers will save time and find candidates they need for the position. These tools can communicate with candidates via Skype, email or text. It can pre-qualify candidates and even reject a candidate if you decide to pass on his or her application. An example is Mya, which stands for “My Recruiting Assistant”.
Another trend which is worth mentioning is Emotion Recognition. This technology allows software to “read” the emotions on a human face using advanced image processing or audio data processing. We are now at the point where we can capture “micro-expressions,” or subtle body language cues, and vocal intonation that betrays a person’s feelings. Law enforcers can use this technology to try to detect more information about someone during interrogation. However, it also has a wide range of applications for marketers. There are increasing numbers of start-ups working in this area.
One factor which causes people to fear AI is an obvious one: unemployment. In the long term, this is a genuine concern, because as AI develops further, human workload will considerably reduce. For the next year, however, this is not a cause of concern. There are predictions that AI will create more jobs in 2019 than it is taking. Warehouse workers and retail cashiers may be replaced, but when it comes to dicey jobs, such as that of doctors and lawyers, AI will be working alongside human professionals, assisting them with repetitive tasks, but leaving the final say to them.
Some of us may like it, some of us may not but the fact is that Artificial Intelligence is a trend that is gripping the world of technology. It isn’t a primitive field, and is here to stay for many decades.
