Dr. Pillai Seminar

10th January, 2017 at 10:00 am in Bhaidas Hall, the avid students from varied fields and professors had assembled to get honoured by the presence of remarkable, eminent and an ingenious ISRO scientist, Dr. A. Sivathanu Pillai. He is a Harvard graduate, an honourary professor at IIT-D and IISc, regarded as the ‘FATHER OF BRAHMOS’, which is a joint venture between India and Russia to work on supersonic missiles and has worked with Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam. He was welcomed with a bouquet of flowers and a memento. Mr. Bhupen Patel, Mr. Chintan Patel and other members of S.V.K.M were also present to further enhance the occasion. A short speech was given to thank Dr Pillai for spending his valuable time with the students of S.V.K.M. And then came the awaiting moment in which Dr. Pillai began educating people about India and Space.

He introduced the ‘KNOWLEDGE AGE’ which will lead to technology power. He made us aware of large reserves of thorium (1/4th) in India. He explained the significance of fusion technology whereby lunar dust can be converted to Helium 3 which is non-radioactive to produce energy. This energy can be used in various forms like generation of electricity. SVL-3 was ISRO’s first launch satellite vehicle. He described the immense importance of ‘Thumba’, a suburb of Thiruvananthapuram city, capital of Kerala. Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) were developed by ISRO for remote sensing, communication and other purposes. Aditya – L1 was launched to analyse the sun. Ballistic missiles were made which follow a parabolic path. 4 strategic missiles were developed which were Agni, Prithvi, Nag and Trishul. He also explained the idea behind the names given to the missiles. For example, the missile was named ‘Nag’ as its trajectory was like a cobra that attacked 400 mm thick opening of missile tank. Cruise missiles were also developed that travelled straight and lower to the ground. Then he explained that about the brilliant supersonic missiles developed by BRAHMOS. BRAHMOS used Ramjet engine for supersonic speed (3 times faster than sound) which met 3 requirements: Multi-platform, Multi-trajectory and Multi-target. It had a vertical launch to stack greater number of missiles. He also enlightened us with ISRO’s new target of hypersonic speed missiles (7 times faster than sound). He enlisted various applications of space technology which will lead the country to the most ‘Advanced Age’. He concluded by sharing his email-id with the students to get their queries solved.

I am proud to be an Indian who had the pleasure to witness this splendid and inevitable event. Being a mechanical engineer, it motivated me to bring innovation in lives of people.
